New Electrostatic Precipitators
An electrostatic precipitator is a highly efficient
particulate collection device that removes particulate
matter from a gas stream (such as flue gas exiting a
boiler) using the force of an electrostatic charge.
The technology was developed in the early part of the
twentieth century and has evolved to play a major role
across a wide range of particulate collecting and control
applications.
Electrostatic precipitators can be part of a process that
recovers the product from the gas stream so it can be
reused. Most precipitators however, are air pollution
control devices which eliminate the emission of these
fine dust particles, commonly referred to as “smoke”
into the environment.

AirTek Electrostatic Precipitator
| Included in every AirTek ESP design is the knowledge gained
by maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding precipitators
since 1988. This experience involves virtually every design
of precipitator in the market. This specialized technical
expertise enables our engineers to design new precipitator
systems that are less complex to construct, reliable,
cost-effective, easy to operate and maintain. |
 |
Using computer programs, field data, and many years
of experience (See About Us) our staff is able to size
precipitators, predict opacity and performance levels,
perform detail design, and evaluate the impact of process
changes.
AirTek Incorporates The Latest Technology In Their
Precipitator Design Including:
• Collecting Plates
• Rigid Discharge Electrodes
• Direct Rapping
• Roof Mounted Electro-magnetic Rapping Systems
• Microprocessor Automatic Voltage Controls to
Ensure Optimal Collection Efficiencies
These features are described below.
Collecting Plate
The AirTek shop assembled collecting plate is designed
for maximum structural integrity and rapping efficiency.
The collecting plate is constructed of roll-formed segments
(modules) which are secured with welds between the vertical
modules. Upper support and lower guide tubular stiffeners
are attached to the modules. The tubular edge prevents
arcing that may occur where the discharge electrodes
pass through collecting zones at the top and bottom
of the collecting plate. These members also maintain
straightness and provide structural rigidity for the
collecting plate which is important for proper alignment.
The upper stiffener serves an additional purpose which
is to transmit the rapping energy for direct plate rapping
as described below. Collecting plates can be provided
in 16 or 18 gauge thicknesses, carbon steel, and other
material for special applications.
Key Features of the AirTek Design are:
• Maximum Structural Integrity and
Stiffness
• Superior Rapping Characteristics
• Uniform Thermal Expansion
• Accurate Plate Alignment
• No Field Assembly
Discharge Electrode
AirTek’s Rigid Discharge Electrode (RDE) consists
of a 1½ or 2-inch diameter tube with corona generating
pins. This results in an RDE which is structurally rigid,
provides the required stiffness for proper alignment,
and is virtually unbreakable.
The welded pin design allows the pin arrangement to
be customized for the application. The vertical spacing
of the pins on the tube can be varied, the pins can
be staggered or opposed, the pins can be angled off
the centerline of the tube, and the length can be varied.
Both spacing and angling of the emitter pins will optimize
the corona onset voltage, maximize the voltage field,
and create conditions to produce high electrical field
strength. Factors that must be considered in determining
the proper electrode arrangement to assure performance
requirements are attained include the type of material
collected, particle size, and particulate loading.
Direct Plate Rapping
AirTek supplies a direct collecting plate rapping system
that ensures superior acceleration and maximum transfer
of rapping energy into the collecting plate. The direct
plate rapping system allows the rapping energy to transfer
directly into the collecting plates and not through
the collecting plate support channels. There are no
welded connections between the rapper rod and collecting
plate which is a common failure point in other designs.
Two collecting plates are rapped at a time to minimize
rapping loses (re-entrainment) that can cause opacity
spikes. Rapping smaller collecting plate areas requires
less impact energy, prolongs the life of the equipment,
and reduces maintenance costs.
Key Features Include:
• Maximized Transfer of Rapping Energy into
the Collecting Plates
• Reduced Re-entrainment
• Maximized Precipitator Efficiency
• Increased Equipment Life
• Reduced Maintenance
• Electromagnetic Rappers
Microprocessors Controllers
AirTek has chosen not to be a supplier or manufacturer
of transformer rectifier automatic voltage controllers,
rapping controllers, or data management systems. This
allows AirTek to stay on the leading edge by being able
to purchase the latest control technology available
for our customers. This also allows AirTek to provide
any control system which the customer desires or may
already have in their facility.
